Taverna Can Margarit

Chrono-geographically, you should start deep in the heart of the locale that is Taverna Can Margarit. There, at the back of everything, you’d dine in what’s left of the house that sat on this land when it was only that: land. Moving forward towards the front you enter the main dining room (formerly the bodega’s almacén), graced with its original barrels, vats, tools and pumps. Under your feet, four wine wells lie dormant and empty, each with a 25,000-liter capacity. Carlos began working for the previous owners of the tavern 17 years ago, washing dishes. Now he owns the place and welcomes guests to the restaurant, which has been kept almost exactly as it was when it was still a functioning bodega, with a small glass and a hand to show you the four small barrels filled with the house wines (all Catalan). Try the conejo, touted as world famous, the patatas al ajo cabañil, and the boquerones, cured right on-site. The candles in the waiting area are romantic towers of accumulated wax 32 years in the making…
